Materials collected by Jean Olson in 1980 while she worked as the editor of "El Mercurio de McCoy," a newspaper published at Camp McCoy, Wis. for the Cuban refugees who had arrived as a result of the Port of Mariel exodus. Included are drawings, poems, and other writings (mainly in Spanish) by the refugees reflecting on camp life, life in Cuba, and their dreams for the future; and photographs of camp life made by Mary Bowers, who was hired by the U.S. Army as an official photographer at the camp. Some items appeared in "El Mercurio."
